A new program is ready to welcome school families at Mary J. Tanner Primary School (MJT) thanks to the PTO, the Granville School District and Community School movement at Granville Schools.
Beginning fall 2026, before school care will be available for UPK students and an afterschool program will be available for UPK to Grade 2 students registered at MJT.
Space is very limited and the deadline to register is Wednesday, August 19th.
Families will be notified on Thursday, August 20th if their student gained placement in the free program.
The UPK Before School Program is designed to support MJT families with older siblings in grades K - 2 and who plan on driving their students to school.
The MJT Afterschool Program is designed for all school families at MJT who want to participate in hands-on learning activities, receive an afterschool snack and enjoy playtime indoors and outdoors.
When kids have a safe, fun place to go before and after the school bell rings, everyone wins.
Studies show that good before and afterschool programs help kids do better in class, miss fewer school days, improves behaviors and creates a sense of belonging and civic pride in their community.
Afterschool enrichment is especially transformative for both children and the local economy.
According to the comprehensive America After 3PM national study:
Workforce Stabilization: 84% of working parents state that afterschool programs are vital to keeping their jobs or working consistent hours, and 85% report immense "peace of mind" knowing their children are safe.
Academic Excitement: 75% of parents agree afterschool programs make their children more excited about learning, directly driving up daily school attendance and improving behavioral outcomes.
The Opportunity Gap: High-income families currently spend 9 times more on out-of-school enrichment activities than low-income families. This program explicitly bridges that gap by providing equitable, high-quality enrichment after school.
Graduation Rates: According to the Upward Mobility Initiative, low-income children in high-quality preschool are 22% more likely to graduate high school. In Granville, 54% of families are facing economic disadvantages. Free after school programs make full-day preschool possible for these families so parents don't have to miss work or pay for costly care to attend preschool.

Both programs will be lead by a certified teacher, teaching aides and the afterschool program will employ high school students who are looking for work and interested in public service.
